Healthy Eating and Lunch Menu

At Windlesham Village Infant School, we believe in encouraging a healthy approach to eating.

Milk and Snacks

Before morning break children are given a fruit or vegetable snack and a drink of water or milk. Parents can sign up for their child to receive a carton of milk from Cool Milk which is free for children under the age of 5 and then at a cost of 28p per day. You can pay for milk online at www.coolmilk.com.

We encourage children to drink water throughout the day and provide water stations for this.

Lunchtime

Children can have a cooked school meal, bring a packed lunch from home or a combination of both which can change from day to day.

School Meals

A delicious range of school meals are cooked on-site daily by our cook. They meet the national standard for school lunches, and offer a balance and nutritious meal. Each contains:

  • One portion of fruit
  • One portion of vegetable
  • One serving of milk or a dairy item
  • One serving of meat, fish or other protein source
  • One serving of starchy food such as bread, pasta or rice.

We are proud to have been awarded the Healthy School Award and our kitchen has a food hygiene rating of 5.

Allergies and special dietary requirements

If your child has a special dietary requirement, has a food allergy, or does not eat a particular food for religious or ethical reasons, please contact the School Office immediately.  It is important that you let us know of any allergies even if your child has a packed lunch every day.  You will be asked to complete a 'Special Diet Request Form' (see attached) and may need to provide medical evidence, if appropriate.  The catering team will review the form and determine appropriate alternative food options for your child as required.

Our catering team, Twelve15, cater for 14 recognised food allergens: celery, crustaceans, dairy, egg, fish, gluten, lupin, molluscs, mustard, nut, peanut, sesame, soya, sulphites.  They also support vegetarian, vegan, pork and beef-free diets.  For more information about the allergens contained in our menus, including a list of the 14 key allergens and the dishes they appear in, please visit Twelve15's website, https://twelve15.mysaffronportal.com/

To guard against food allergies, we ask that children do not share food in school.

Universal Free School Meals

In September 2014, the government introduced universal free school meals for all infant school pupils so all of our pupils are entitled to receive a complimentary cooked meal.

Pupils who were formerly eligible to receive free school meals may still attract additional funding (known as Pupil Premium) for the school. To establish eligibility we ask that you complete the form in your welcome pack and return it to the school office.

Healthy Packed Lunches

For those not wanting a school-cooked meal, children are able to bring a packed lunch – we encourage these to be healthy packed lunches as we see these as being vital for getting children through the school day and instilling good eating habits for life. The Food Standards Agency has put together an advice document for parents called 'Feeding Your Growing Child'.

Please do not give your child fizzy drinks and foods high in salt and saturated fat such as sweets, cakes and crisps. We are a nut and sesame free school and we insist that parents do not include any nuts (or items containing nuts or sesame seeds) within their child’s lunch box. This is to ensure the health and welfare of children with allergies. Remember to clearly label your child's lunch box and food/drink containers with their full name.
