Windlesham Village Infant School

Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Education

At Windlesham Village Infant School, we believe in educating the whole child. This means that we look to promote the children’s social, moral, spiritual and cultural development.  We do this through our daily interactions with the children, as well as our planned curriculum. We teach and promote a different value each half-term. This compliments our PSHE teaching, where we follow the Kapow Primary scheme of work.

Trick Box

Since September 2021, we have been using the Trick Box programme to structure our teaching of personal, social and emotional development. We believe it helps us to enable the children to develop personal skills such as listening, negotiation and expressing their emotions in an appropriate way.

We organise special days throughout the academic year which may raise awareness of issues, allow the children to practise key skills, develop team-building skills, have fun together or raise money for a charity or cause. These have included, most recently: Christmas Jumper Day for Save The Children; Red Nose Day for Comic relief; Mufti Day for Pudsey/Children-in-Need; Camo Day for ssafa.

We draw on the cultural diversity within our school and celebrate our difference. We learn about different faiths and festivals throughout the year. This is supported by our RE teaching.

No Outsiders

 In assembly we use the texts from the No Outsiders scheme.

No Outsiders is taught to each year group through the use of age-appropriate books. Through these beautiful picture books, the children learn about the 7 protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010. These include:

  • age;
  • disability;
  • gender reassignment;
  • race;
  • religion or belief;
  • gender;
  • sexual orientation.

It is important we create a school culture in which children, staff and the whole school community work together to foster an environment of inclusivity through effective spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) and character education.

We believe that it is vital that our pupils can discuss inappropriate and discriminative language and understand how to address boundaries in order to prepare them for a future in modern Britain.

We strive to ensure that our pupils are surrounded by a consistent message:

  • There are no outsiders here;
  • Everyone is different;
  • We like being different;
  • We are all equal in our difference;
  • I can get along with you even if we are different;
  • We live in the U.K., our British values support this and the law says this too.

Resilience and responsibility

We promote resilience and responsibility. We involve the children in key tasks throughout the day, such as keeping our classrooms tidy, clearing away after lunch, collecting our daily fruit and milk and helping each other. Our pupils act as envoys of our school at events, such as the Remembrance Day Service. We look to engage with the views of our pupils through the School Council, who give us feedback.
