Guiding Principles

Windlesham Village Infant School is a caring and supportive mainstream infant school.  We are an inclusive school where all members of staff share the responsibility of meeting our pupils’ needs and every teacher is a teacher of special educational needs (SEN). Our inclusive teaching, targeted support and school values enable all our children to make the best possible progress in school and feel that they are valued members of the wider school community. We have high expectations of all our pupils and set ambitious educational and wider outcomes. It is important to us that every child leaves our school with a love of learning and as happy and confident individuals. 

Areas of Need

These four broad areas give an overview of the range of needs that should be planned for. A child’s needs are identified by considering the whole child not just the Special Educational Needs. The purpose of identification is to work out what actions we need to take, not simply to fit a pupil to a category. In practice, individual children or young people often have needs that cut across all these areas and their needs may change over time.

Other Needs

When identifying the needs of the whole child we also consider other factors, in addition to Special Educational Needs, which may impact on progress and attainment.  These may include:

• attendance and punctuality
• health and welfare
• English as an Additional Language
• being in receipt of the Pupil Premium Grant
• being a Looked After Child
• being a child of a Serviceman/woman
• disability (the Code of Practice outlines the “reasonable adjustment” duty for all settings and schools provided under current Disability Equality legislation-these alone do not constitute SEN)
